Cuesta Men's Wrestling traveled to Bakersfield for the SouthEast Conference (SEC) Tournament. The Cougars rolled through the competition to win their second straight SEC Tournament title. Cuesta travelled to Bakersfield with 14 grapplers, who posted a combined 27-10 record. The Cougars also boasted eight all-SEC honors, including four SouthEast Conference Champions.
The Cougars season-win leader Dom Marquez started the Cougars off with a title at 133, while bumping his team-leading win total up to 27 on the season. Returning All-Americans Grant Eklund (157) and Preston Scharf (165) joined Kodie Cooks (174) to claim three more titles in the middle of the ladder.
The Cougars' quartet of Champions set the pace for the team, and the Cougars ended up with seven grapplers earning all-SEC Honors. Freshman Jeo Navarette-Maganda almost gave the Cougars' a fifth title but lost the title bout and settled for the Silver at 141, while Ben Green took the Bronze with 3-1 mark at 184 and the team's workhorse Marshall Beecham finished 4th, behind Scharf, at 165. Beecham's loss in the Bronze Medal match was his 36th bout of the year and only Marquez (37) has put in more time on the mat for Cuesta this season. Four members of the team have also broken into the Cougars' Top 10 Career Wins List. All American Grant Eklund (61 career wins) is currently two wins behind Michael Williams record of 63 career wins, while fellow veterans Marquez (55), Scharf (52 wins) and Beecham (45) have also packed the Top 10.
The Cougars compete in The Brawl Tournament this Saturday at heat to East Los Angeles College for their final regular season competition.
