The Cuesta Women's Track and Field team finished second at the 2026 Western State Conference Championships. Individually the women claimed four event titles on the weekend and were led by returning all-State Thrower Kiera Taylor, who won two event titles.
The versatile and talented Kiera Taylor (pict) who also played volleyball and basketball for the Cougars, led a Cuesta sweep of throwing events at the WSC Championships. Taylor took the title in both the Discus and Hammer, while fellow Sophomore Heptathlete Kristy Huynh and Freshman Bella Teresi claimed the Javelin and Shot Put, respectively. Taylor (5th), Huynh (4th) and Freshman Nevaeh Dyer (2nd) also joined Teresi to provide the Cougars with a near sweep on the Shot Put. The Cougars dominated all of the throwing events, with depth. Huynh's fellow Heptathlete Mia Martin took the Silver in the Javelin and also finished 3rd in the High Jump
Huynh, Cuesta's 2025 Team MVP, left her marks all over the event. Along with her throwing prowess, finished 2nd in the High Jump, 3rd in the Long Jump, 6th in the Triple Jump, just behind teammate Riley Passanisi. Passanisi, one of the Cougars' top newcomers, also finished 2nd in the 200-hurdles. The Cougars did not produce a big showing on the track, and, with Passanisi and Sophomore Samantha Duran in the Hurdles and all-WSC Harrier Rebekah Waterbury in the 10K, they made enough of a mark to challenge for the WSC Crown. Cuesta advances into the regionals with almost their whole squad and should make their mark at the next level.
After two weeks of battling through the Western State Conference, the next fortnight of competition shall be at the Southern California Regional Preliminaries and Finals. After a full lunar cycle of qualifying events, the best-of-the-best shall earn a place at the 2026 3C2A State Championships in mid-May.
