Cuesta Women's Volleyball picked up another Western State Conference victory with a four-set (25-7, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17) win over local rival Allan Hancock. The Cougars immediately put the Bulldogs on their heels with an impressive win in the opening set, 25-7, which marked Cuesta's most lopsided single set win of the year. The Cougars pushed the match to the brink by winning the second set, although Allan Hancock did bounce back from the opener and pushed the home team to the limit, before falling, 25-23. The Bulldogs kept pushing the Cougars and avoided a sweep by taking the third set, 25-21. After their disastrous opener, the Bulldogs regrouped and entered the fourth set with confidence, after outscoring the home team 48-46 in the second and third sets. Cuesta steadied their course for the fourth set and held the lead from start to finish to take the deciding set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1. The victory improved the Cougars overall record to 10-8 overall and 2-3 against the WSC-North Division.
Cuesta Women's Volleyball shall complete its first swing through their division this Friday (6 PM), when they travel to Sylmar to face #7 Los Angeles Mission. The Eagles (formerly known as the "Free Spirit"), ranked 7th in the State, are one of four teams in the division ranked in the CCCAA's Top 25, along with #6 Santa Barbara City, #13 Moorpark and #24 Ventura. However, amongst the conference, only Los Angeles Pierce (2010-12) can match Cuesta's three CCCAA State Volleyball titles (1979, 1985-86).
All-WSC Outside Hitter Cayley Brown,(pict) who set the Cougars' Single Season Ace Record in 2024, landed her 42nd ace of the 2025 season against the Bulldogs, while also claiming a second spot in the Cougars' All-Time Top 10 list with 42nd Service Ace of the season. Brown also broke Bailey Woodside's one-year old mark for career service aces and is now the Cougars all-time Ace leader with 110 unreturnable offerings. Brown's current season total ties, of 42 aces, also ties her teammate Kiera Taylor and four other players for the final spot on Cuesta single-season Top 10 list. Brown, with 452 career kills and eight regular season matches left on the schedule, also ranks 8th all time on the Cougars' all-time list for career kills but is chasing another of Woodside's program standards (861 kills).
