Cuesta's Harriers matched themselves against the Western State Conference for the first time this season for the WSC Preview Meet at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. The men landed in the runner-up spot, just six points behind a Moorpark squad, while the women posted only four finishers and did not score as a team.
The WSC Preview marked the season debut for 2024 CCCAA State Champion Weston Greenelsh, who enjoyed a dominant first start of the season. Greenelsh finished the course with a winning time of 22:10.7, while his enjoying his second straight cross-country victory. Greenelsh, who was named Cuesta's 2025 co-Athlete of the Year after also winning a State Title for the 5,000-meters in Track, missed the Cougars' first two starts of the season, although he appears to be in top form. Cuesta Freshman Jeffrey Mondonca took a step back after leading the Cougars in their first two races, while remaining in contention at 12th (23:18.8) overall. Greenelsh's fellow 2024 State Qualifier John-Paul Walsh was the third Cougar to cross the line, while also cracking the Top 20 with 16th place and a time of 23:35.1. First-year Harriers Anthony Frere and Colton Baker completed the Cougars' scoring team in 24th and 26th place.
The women's team failed to score as a team for the second time in their first three starts but did land three harriers among the circuit's Top 15 finishers. The Cougars' one-two punch of Isabella Efner and Rebekah Waterbury both enjoyed their third straight Top 10 finish of the season. Efner and Waterbury finished 5th (22:09.7) and 9th (22:47.5) overall, while fellow Freshman Sophia Esparza Perez crossed in 12th place (22:54.8). Cuesta and their victorious fellow Cougars from the College of the Canyons were the only teams to land three harriers among the Top 12 and were still in line for a team Bronze after Sarah Garcia crossed in 32nd place as their fourth finisher.
The course at Arroyo Verde Park has often pulled double duty and hosted the WSC Circuit's "Preview" and "Finals", but in a change of venue the conference finals are scheduled to be hosted by Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills on October 24. The Cuesta Harriers next race is the Gaucho Twilight Run this Friday (6 PM). The event shall be held at the Mission Club in Lompoc.
