Cuesta Men's & Women's Cross Country team travel to Fresno's Woodward Park this Saturday for the 2025 3C2A State Championships. Woodward Park has hosted the past 26 State Meets and has become the permanent site since Cuesta, as one of only three other venues to host since the two-division system was abolished in 1984, hosted the event in 1999. The women's race shall open the event at 10 AM, while the gun goes off for the men's race at 11 AM.
Cuesta's five-woman team has run well as a pack this season and has seen three different runners lead them in a race. Four of the Cougars' five members earned all-Western State Conference honors, including First Teamers Selena Trejo and Rebekah Waterbury. Fellow Freshman Isabella Efner led Cuesta's pack in each of the season's first five events, however fellow rookies Sophia Esparza Perez and Sarah Garcia shall be the key to the Cougars' final ranking.
On the men's side, all eyes will be in 2024 3C2A State Champion Weston Greenelsh in his bid to become the third harrier to win back-to-back state titles. Greenelsh, who also picked up a 3C2A title in track last spring, would join Grossmont's Ed Mendoza, the Division II Champion in 1971 and 1972, and Orange Coast's Humberto Rojas in 2003 and 2004. Greenelsh, after missing the season's first two starts, has led the Cougars in each of the past five races, including titles at the WSC Preview, Hartnell's Pink in the Park, and the WSC Championships. He was also the runner-up at the SoCal Regional. This week, Greenelsh should expect fellow all-WSC First Teamers Jeff Mendonca and John-Paul Walsh (pict) to join him near the front of the pack. All-WSC Harriers Anthony Frere and Alex Schindler lead the rest of the Cougars' scoring team, which includes Colton Baker, Oscar Allen and Aiden Gibson. All five runners have rotated through the Cougars' Top five this season.
